Free FROZEN Alphabet Cards

My girls absolutely love the movie Frozen and anything to do with it. So I created these FREE Frozen themed Alphabet Cards to help them learn their alphabet and letter sounds. We also play a lot of fun educational games with these cards. The possibilities are endless!

FREE Frozen Alphabet Cards

These FREE Frozen Alphabet Cards include 26 images and words, one for each letter of the alphabet, featuring either a main character from the movie, or an object or idea with a movie scene as the image.

Just print them out, laminate each sheet, then cut out the cards. Here are some ideas for playing with these cards:

-Create an alphabet flip book that you can look through and practice reading the letters and/or words.
-Hang the cards on the wall to create a decorative alphabet chart.
-Play a memory game: make 2 copies of each card, lay them face down and play the classic game.
-Play a bingo game: Lay down a set of 9 or 16 cards to create a large bingo mat. Then, call out letters and have the child put a token on the correct card.
-Talk about each character or what is happening in each picture. Great for language development, imagination and memory.

These cards are excellent for many different stages of development. For toddlers it is a good introduction to the alphabet. Preschoolers will benefit from practicing letter sounds, and emergent readers can use these as simple words to practice reading.

Thawing a Frozen Heart: Sensory Science for Kids (Love to Learn Linky #25)

$

0
It's no secret that my kids love Frozen! In fact, their favorite part of the movie is when Anna gets turned into ice and they come to the realization that "an act of true love will thaw a frozen heart". Since Valentine's Day is coming up, I thought it would be fun to do a sensory and science activity where they can thaw Anna's frozen heart!

(If you're new to the blog, also check out our Frozen Learning Pack and Frozen Alphabet Cards!)

Thawing a Frozen Heart: Sensory Science for Kids

This activity was so easy to set up, and it was great for introducing my 3 year old to science concepts such as phases of matter (ice/ water), temperature (hot/cold) and buoyancy (float/sink), all while pretending she was rescuing her favorite Frozen character, Anna!

What you'll need:
-ice cube tray
-water
-hearts cut out of red construction paper

1 - First I cut out 16 hearts from construction paper. (however many ice cubes your tray holds) The fastest way to do this is to take one sheet of red construction paper and fold it in half and then in half again and keep folding until you get a square small enough to fit in an ice cube tray. Then you can cut several hearts with one cut. I got all 16 in one shot by doing this.

2 - Fill the ice cube tray with water and add a heart in each space.

3 - Let freeze overnight.

The first thing I did was let my daughter touch and play with all the frozen hearts. This was a great sensory experience and she really enjoyed it!

Then, we tried several ways to thaw the hearts:

1- Putting one frozen heart in a glass of water and letting it sit there. (You can even have one glass of warm water and one with cold water and see which one melts faster)

2- Putting one frozen heart on a plate and using a dropper to pour drops of water on it.

3 - We also tried thawing one heart by holding it in our hands and letting body heat melt the ice.

\
4 - Another thing that we didn't try but would have been fun is adding salt to the frozen hearts and observing what happens.

The heart that was floating in the glass of water finally thawed and we realized it wasn't floating anymore. It sank to the bottom! Apparently, paper hearts do not float.

Train Number Puzzle for Toddlers

When my first daughter was 2 years old, I created this train puzzle for her to practice counting and number recognition. At that time, she was not very interested in it, so I put it away and forgot about it. I found it again the other day and showed it to her (she's 3 and a half now), and to my surprise she loved it and has been playing with it every day!

The Number Train! Free printable puzzle

As you can see this puzzle is pretty big. It consists of 11 pieces: the front of the train plus 10 train cars filled with animals and numbers 1-10. I laminated it and made sure to cut off the sharp corners.

Another way to use this puzzle is to hang it on the wall as an educational wall decoration.

DIY Photo Name Puzzle (Love to Learn Linky #30)

Today I would like to share a very simple activity that I made for my daughter to help her learn the letters in her name. It literally took 5 minutes to make this personalized photo name puzzle. She loves to do activities with photographs, such as our Photo ABC Cards, so I knew this would be a hit!

Photo Name Puzzle

First, I snapped a quick picture of her with my phone (landscape format), then emailed it to myself. (skip this step if you have a photo on your computer)

I saved and opened up the picture on my computer. It opened in Windows Photo Viewer and I clicked print. In the options I chose the layout with two 5"x7" photos on one page. It will only print the photo once but it leaves plenty of space to write the name. Click print again.

Here is how it came out. I used a permanent marker to write her name, spacing it out over the length of the photo.

Then I laminated the sheet (optional), and cut the photo into vertical strips. Puzzle complete!

CVC Word Balloon Game

Totschooling has officially turned a year old and I am very excited to announce the start of my guest blogger series! My very first guest is Susen from Dabbling Momma! On her blog you can find tons of hands-on educational ideas for preschoolers and beyond. Some of my favorites are Learning about our 5 Senses, Learning about Seasons, and Helicopter Number Hide and Seek Game. She is seriously awesome and I am so excited to feature one of her creative activities. Take it away Susen!

CVC Word Balloon Game

Learning how to read must be made fun because our little ones can become frustrated. We have been practicing CVC words since the end of last year and we're making great progress. Back in December we used popsicle sticks and stamps to help learn CVC words. This time around I used balloons since my daughter loves playing with them and thought incorporating them into learning would be a winner for us.

I had a bag of those long balloons and blew up what was left and wrote some CVC words on them. Next, I hid the balloons around the house because my daughter likes everything that much more when a hunt is involved!

After she found a balloon she would run over to these bins where I attached another CVC word. She had to sound out the word on the balloon and then put it in the basket that had the same vowel sound word.

After she finished finding all the balloons and placing them into the correct bins we continued playing by trying to throw the balloons into the bins.

This game was alot of fun! She even got to burn off some energy running around trying to find the balloons and then back to the bins again.

I'm a SAHM to a 9 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. My son is in 3rd grade and I am homeschooling my 4 year old for her last preschool year. This fall she will be headed off to kindergarten. I love learning with my children and finding ways to make their learning fun! Even though both of my children will be in school come this fall I will always be looking for ways to engage them in activities that will help them be the best they can in their school years and beyond!
